“The master sees beyond what is obvious. He sees the unseen, feels the unfelt, and hears the unheard. He looks below the surface for what is hidden and so finds the great heartbeat of the Universe. He smiles, knowing it is his heartbeat, your heartbeat, our heartbeat.”
Wu Wei, I Ching Wisdom
Inspired by Love
I started writing calligraphy as a college student in South Korea in the 1970's, winning multiple prizes, but never pursued it further at the time. In 2012, I felt called to take up the brush again after my beloved wife Hyungja was diagnosed with cancer. Calligraphy became a central outlet for the great joys and deep sorrows of life, and a way to connect with those who have come before us in this world and wrestled with the same unanswerable questions. For me, calligraphy is simultaneously a way to express the inner workings of my soul and interpret the wisdom of the great masters of the past who have been admired and studied for many generations. My wife passed away in 2015 after her courageous battle came to an end, and since then calligraphy has become even more of a lifeline for me.
I currently live in Ann Arbor, Michigan and do all my work in my home studio. I have four children ranging from ages 18 to 32 pursuing careers in the classical music and pharmacy fields. I also love the freedom of running, and have completed dozens of marathons and several ultramarathons in the last decade.
